M'khuzo Mwachande

Zambia & University of Cape Town, 2023

M’khuzo Mwachande is an Investment Banker focused on expanding access to capital across Sub-Saharan Africa. He currently serves as Credit Origination Manager within Corporate & Investment Banking at First National Bank Zambia, part of the FirstRand Group. In this role, he originates and evaluates corporate credit transactions, supporting complex financing solutions and capital allocation decisions within Zambia’s evolving financial markets.

His experience spans sovereign, infrastructure, and corporate finance transactions across frontier markets, where he has developed expertise in credit structuring, capital markets, and project finance. Among his notable transactions is a landmark deal on the Lusaka Securities Exchange, where he restructured a $15m corporate bond and raised $8.7m through a rights issue, navigating complex regulatory requirements and multi-stakeholder negotiations.

M’khuzo’s work focuses on addressing structural financing gaps across emerging markets, including limited pension fund mobilisation, a $200bn infrastructure deficit, and a $2.1tn SME financing gap across Africa. His perspectives on capital markets and macroeconomic trends have been featured in African Business Magazine, where he writes on the role of private capital in development and the evolution of frontier financial markets.

He holds a Master of Commerce in Development Finance from the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business, a BA in Economics and Finance, and is a Chartered Management Accountant (CIMA, UK). As a Mandela Rhodes Scholar, he is committed to building institutions that deepen African capital markets and unlock long-term investment for the continent’s economic growth.
