Mwayi Prudence Msokera

Malawi & Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2023

Mwayi Prudence Msokera is a global health leader working at the intersection of health systems strengthening, workforce development, and quality of care. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Malawi and a Postgraduate qualification in Political and Conflict Studies from Nelson Mandela University in South Africa. She is a certified professional in healthcare quality through the National Association for Healthcare Quality (NAHQ), a Mandela Rhodes Foundation Scholarship alumna, and an alumna of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI – South Africa).

Mwayi currently serves as Programmes Implementation Manager at the Learning Center for Quality Management (LCQM), where she leads national and regional initiatives to institutionalise Quality Improvement (QI) across health systems and health workforce training. She has led high-level regulatory engagement with national councils responsible for nursing, medicine, and pharmacy, contributing to the nationwide integration of Quality Improvement into pre-service education, with QI now taught across all nursing schools in Malawi. She also led the development of standardised national QI curricula for Certificate, Diploma, and Degree programmes.

Her leadership has been central to evidence-informed policy and curriculum reform, having led national Training Needs Assessments and situational analyses across health facilities and training institutions. These assessments directly informed national training priorities, curriculum design, and regulatory decision-making, strengthening alignment between policy, education, and service delivery. Mwayi has advanced digital and blended learning for health workforce development, leading the design of an e-learning Patient Safety course in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Imperial College London. She has also facilitated the delivery of national competency-based training programmes in collaboration with NHS UK, convening regulators, Ministry of Health directorates, and implementing partners to strengthen coordination and coherence across the health sector.

She has designed and led national and regional Quality Improvement training programmes, training and certifying Quality Improvement Coaches from Malawi and Uganda while embedding real-world service delivery improvement projects into the training model. Her work includes designing and implementing a targeted mentorship approach for QI model hospitals, supporting facilities to progress within Malawi’s national stepwise quality improvement programme. She has also led the development and operationalisation of governance and patient safety policies at facility level, strengthening accountability, safety, and continuity of care.

Previously, Mwayi worked with the Quality Management Directorate, where she coordinated the development of Malawi’s first Health Facility Accreditation Policy Roadmap and facilitated the development of the National Quality of Care Standards, laying the policy and technical foundation for the country’s national quality improvement programme. She also contributed to national initiatives on infection prevention, continuous professional development, and maternal, neonatal, and child health quality of care.

Earlier in her career, Mwayi served as Deputy National Coordinator of the Maestros Leadership Team, an award-winning social enterprise that reached over 30,000 people through leadership, governance, and civic engagement initiatives. She has also been recognised for advancing menstrual health advocacy, linking girls’ education, dignity, and environmental sustainability.

Mwayi’s long-term vision is to contribute to global Quality Improvement and patient safety efforts, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, and to establish a need-based scholarship foundation in honour of her father, supporting access to education for young people with limited opportunities.
