Smangaliso Mbili
South Africa & University of Cape Town, 2023 A dynamic systems thinker and change agent committed to expanding pathways for young people to thrive, Smangaliso Areal Mbili works at the intersection of skills development, innovation, and inclusive economic participation. He holds a first-class BA (Hons) in Global Challenges from African Leadership University and a Master of Development Policy and Practice from the University of Cape Town as a Mandela Rhodes Scholar. Smangaliso currently serves as Innovation Manager for the All Young People on Pathways to Productivity portfolio at the DG Murray Trust. In this role, he leads a multi-million-rand strategic grant portfolio focused on strengthening transitions from education and training into economic participation. His work centres on demand-led skilling, work-integrated learning, entrepreneurship, and ecosystem collaboration across public, private, and civil society partners to unlock scalable opportunity pathways for young people. With expertise in leadership development, curriculum design, and programme strategy, he brings practical experience in NGO management, project management, research, digital communications, and systems innovation. He has worked across multiple African contexts, contributing to initiatives that connect youth capability development with real economic participation. Earlier in his career, Smangaliso served as a project manager and research assistant at Vatel Rwanda International Hospitality School, where he led research initiatives and developed case study partnerships focused on the hospitality and tourism sectors in Rwanda and Nigeria. He also coordinated the inaugural TEDx ALU Rwanda and managed the MCN Fellowship, fostering collaboration and intellectual exchange across emerging leaders. At the University of Cape Town, he served as Partnerships and Sponsorships Lead for TEDxUCT 2025, cultivating strategic partnerships and mobilising resources to support a platform for bold ideas and public dialogue. From 2024 to 2026, Smangaliso served as President of the ALU Alumni Association, leading a dedicated executive team and supporting the growth of one of Africa’s most dynamic pan-African alumni networks. Beyond his professional commitments, he is passionate about photography, fitness, hiking, and creative expression. Grounded in both policy and practice, Smangaliso is driven by a deep belief in the power of well-designed systems, collaborative leadership, and human potential to transform communities and economies.
